GREAT! romance to Launch on Thursday 5th January 2023
Dreaming of cosying up with some love-ly film entertainment in the New Year? GREAT! romance, a...
South Wales is one of my favourite places in the world, so when I was asked to visit The Angel Hotel in Abergavenny, I jumped at the chance. My partner joined me, and having not visited the area for years, he was giddy with excitement and couldn't wait to see the sights.
When we arrived, we were impressed by the hotel's grand exterior and gorgeous décor. The pleasant receptionist answered any questions we had and made sure we settled in comfortably. The space went beyond our expectations, with a super king-size bed, a TV, living room and grand windows, which overlooked the town. Just when we thought it couldn't get any better, we saw the en suite bathroom, boasting a walk-in rain shower, heated towel rails, gorgeous décor and complimentary toiletries.
After a few hours' rest, we were introduced to the lovely Claire, the events and reservations manager at the hotel. She showed us the facilities and the impressive wedding spaces. We both fell in love with the gorgeous 19th-century chapel that's used for ceremonies and the impressive Abergavenny Castle, located just around the corner, that's ideal for drinks receptions. There were also a variety of rooms located inside the hotel, perfect for nuptials of any size. My favourite was the grand Ballroom, a beautiful space with original ceilings, Italian crystal chandeliers and a private bar.
To dine for
After lounging around in our white fluffy robes on our unbelievably comfortable bed, it was a struggle dragging ourselves out of the room for dinner, even though I couldn't wait to taste the food I'd heard so much about. I'm quite a fussy eater, but there was so much choice that it was difficult to choose just one dish!
The delightful staff escorted us to our table where we were presented with a glass of champagne each and our first course. We both opted for the kiln-smoked salmon with creamed wasabi and leek dressing. It was lovely, and I could have easily eaten a second serving! For the main, I chose the lamb shank with saffron potato puree. My partner went with the roast partridge. My meal was delicious, and it was the ideal size to fill me up but leave enough room for what I consider to be the main event: dessert! I finished with a latte and trio of small puddings – I have a really sweet tooth, so for me this was the perfect choice. It wasn't too heavy, and I could have happily eaten more. The service was impeccable, and the staff went out of their way to ensure we were enjoying ourselves and had everything we needed.
After dinner, we visited the on-site bar. This charming space had a cosy and relaxed atmosphere – a must-visit if you're staying at the hotel. A few hours later, we wearily climbed the grand staircase to our room, and I fell asleep as soon as my head hit the pillow.
Pure indulgence
We awoke after the best night's sleep we'd had in a long time, feeling like royalty. We had breakfast in the main restaurant, where there was something to suit everyone, from pastries and cereal to a full-English. We both opted for the continental option; it was delicious, and there was so much food that I think I ate enough for two!
We were sad to be leaving after such a luxurious stay, having fallen in love with The Angel Hotel. It's safe to say we're planning on visiting again soon!
