How to treat your hair hangover

How to treat your hair hangover: Image 1 Your hair can take a beating during the festive season with all the styling. The hair experts share how you can bring it back to health for the new year:

DEEP CONDITIONING
"Regular conditioning is vital. Leaving it on so it penetrates the hair is vital too." Says Neil Moodie, Session Stylist and Viviscal Ambassador. "Just applying and rinsing it straight off is of no benefit. The hair has no time to draw the ingredients it needs. Also a once a week treatment is essential too especially on dry damaged hair. Leave on for at 20 mins, again allowing the ingredients to penetrate into the hair shaft properly. For added volume try Viviscal's new Gorgeous Growth Densifying Conditioner (£9.99), which moisturises and conditions hair leaving it looking and feeling fuller, thicker and shiny."

SENSATIONAL SUPPLEMENTS
"I recommend Viviscal supplements (£49.99, Boots) to clients, models and celebrities." Says Neil Moodie, Session Stylist and Viviscal Ambassador who has worked with the likes of Kate Moss and Cara Delevingne. "Nourishing the hair from the inside out is the most effective way of getting hair back on track. Viviscal contains the Marine Protein Amino Mar CTM, which is great for promoting and maintaining healthy hair growth. I always notice a much healthier hair growth and often a slight increase in speed of growth when clients are taking it. For best results Viviscal must be taken 90 days or more but I promise you that the improvement in the condition of your hair will make the wait worthwhile."

GET YOUR DIET BACK ON TRACK
"Nutrition plays a key role in the health of skin, hair and nails." Says Viviscal Nutritionist Juliette Kellow on behalf of Viviscal "A poor intake of vitamins and minerals can quickly affect the condition of the hair so a well-rounded, balanced diet with the right mix of protein, iron and other nutrients is vital for the hair just as much as the rest of the body."

Helen Bond, Nutritionist on behalf of The Harley Medical Group adds "Iron is particularly important so make sure you are getting enough in your diet. You can increase your iron levels by eating red meat such as beef, lamb, venison and other game. Vegetarian sources include beans, pulses, dark leafy green vegetables and dried fruit. To aid absorption from vegetarian sources include vitamin C rich foods at the same time (red pepper, citrus, berries). Protein is important so include 2-3 portions of quality protein foods each day - eggs, poultry, fish, lean meat, beans, pulses, tofu or take a protein powder supplement. You may also wish to increase your B vitamins particularly biotin - which can be found in eggs, almonds, oats, onions, sweet potato and walnuts."

USE THE RIGHT SHAMPOO
Trichologist Steven Goldsworthy on behalf of Viviscal, explains how often you should be washing your hair depending on your hair type "Scalps can be dry, greasy, normal, dandruff, affected or irritable. This will then have an effect on the hair. Grease is known as sebum and is produced by the sebaceous gland which is found on the hair follicle and whose job is to secrete sebum onto the hair as it grows lubricating it. Too much sebum production can lead to greasy hair and too little to dry hair. Ideally if your hair is greasy wash it regularly with a mild shampoo, you do not want a harsh shampoo stripping out the natural moisture of the hair. With dry hair you can shampoo less frequently but with a moisturising shampoo".

ADD SOME VOLUME
If your hair is feeling a little limp after too much styling, invest in some products that will add some volume back in. Hair Stylist Philippe Tholimet "After shampooing your hair, towel dry your hair and let it dry on its own for about 60% and then you can start blow drying it. This way you create volume and bounce rapidly and it will last longer. Try and choose products that are designed to add volume to the hair."

And if you're looking to have a trim for the new year, go for a blunt cut. "I would definitely recommend a blunt cut" says Philippe. "A strong heavy fringe, so think 70's vibe can really make the hair appear thicker. For finer hair I always recommend a blunt cut with no layering as this can make the hair look thinner and fly-away"
