How to stop the heat ruining your hair and make-up

There are different products to help your hair and make-up last longer in the summer. For oily skin, you don't want layers of thick make-up, and hair spray must be a strong hold that lasts through the humidity.

We generally recommend a summer bride to have her hair up, as the locks will be pinned up and in place all day, keeping the neck cool throughout the day. If you want your hair down, a half up/ down style is ideal. Apply a volumising mousse before styling to help keep the look in place throughout the day.

Janet E White-Ashby tells us the best hair and make-up styles for a summer wedding

Deciding whether your hair should be up or down comes down to the neckline of your wedding dress. If you're wearing a strapless gown, have your locks down or half up in beach waves or curls. This will look pretty and feminine while showing off the gown's neckline.

An up do is ideal if you're worried about being hot throughout the day. Tendrils will make the style soft and romantic and cooler on the nape of the neck.

Popular styles this summer include both high and sleek low ponytails. These enhance dresses that are off-the-shoulder.

Hair stylist Stacey Williams tells us her top tips for styling curly hair

You could embrace your natural curls by scrunching the hair with good products and doing a half up and half down style. Pin some loose tousled pieces off your face while leaving the remaining pieces curly.

Alternatively, you could smooth some of your locks out to create a more relaxed style. This can be done by straightening certain areas.

Depending on the length of your hair you could create a loose up do. This can be high or low depending on the length you have to work with.

The key to controlling curly tresses is quality products. Some of my favourites are:

Stacey Williams, a hairstylist in Swansea, has won gold at The British Hair and Beauty Awards

Stacey Williams, a hairstylist in Swansea, has won gold at The British Hair and Beauty Awards for Best Bridal/Special Occasion Hair Styles of the Year.

We spoke to Stacey to find out more: "I started hairdressing almost 18 years ago at the age of 15 and have focused on weddings a lot more in the last nine years. I love everything about a wedding, from the first conversation with the bride to the morning of the big day. I try my best to make sure my bride is relaxed and stress-free about her hair. I stay until she's ready to leave for the aisle or until she is happy that I'm no longer needed, I also help the bridesmaids into their dresses and help the bride get buttoned up.

How to incorporate a vintage theme into your hair and make-up

A vintage-themed wedding can be anything from the glamour of the 1920s to the rock and roll energy of the 50s. A couple that chooses a particular decade usually lives a somewhat vintage lifestyle and equates that in their style. Create an inspiration board to help group your ideas. Pick the hairstyle you like the most and ask your stylist to work with you to re-create it, taking into consideration your face shape, hair thickness and texture. Your make-up should enhance your chosen style, think of smoky eyes, red lips, liners and lashes mixed with a modern-day twist.

You have managed to put together a plan – congratulations, the hardest part is done! You want to look beautiful and feel special on your big day, which can easily be achieved with the assistance of a professional. First, decide on your budget. Set your minimum and your maximum. At this stage, it does not matter the exact numbers of people in your party, but it's good to know what your limits are. This next step is very important.

The latest hair and make-up trends

A popular hairstyle is soft Hollywood waves accessorised with pearl pins or a headband. I've also seen a rise in textured up dos with fresh flowers or flower crowns, which is perfect for outdoor weddings with a relaxed boho vibe. For your make-up, soft glamour with brown smoky eyes and gold pigments will make your eyes pop. Finish with wispy lashes, a bronzer and a nude lip. Alternatively, you could opt for the oh-so-popular fresh, dewy look. It's a very natural style that concentrates on the skin with dusky pinks and rose golds for the eyes, blush on the cheeks and a nude or pink for the lips.
