Cavani sees a growing trend for professional suit tailoring

Even men with a keen eye for fashion get things wrong when it comes to choosing a suit. Despite being a wardrobe staple, many don't know how to select a well-fitted suit which is essential for a wedding.

New research from men's suit styling experts, Cavani, used metrics obtained from Google Ads Keyword Planner to highlight the most common reasons for making a wrong choice. Approximately 5,400 average monthly searches were recorded for the term 'suit tailor near me,' highlighting a large knowledge gap and a growing need for professional dress advice. Similarly, an average of almost 600 monthly searches for the term 'suit sizing chart' suggests men are unsure about their precise suit measurements and may end up with something that doesn't fit.

However, the data reveals that over 5,760 annual searches were recorded for the term 'suit too big,' 3,840 searches for 'suit too tight,' and 3,120 searches for 'suit too small,' suggesting many of us still get it wrong when it comes to suit selection.

It may be the case that some suit mistakes are caused by shifting trends and design preferences. For instance, tight suits that were popular a few years ago may not be so desirable for today's modern dresser. However, the research shows that men still have a long way to go to perfect the art of suit buying. Even today, a well-fitted suit makes all the difference. No matter how premium the fabric or how sharp the design, if a suit doesn't fit properly, it simply won't look right.

The right fit should enhance your natural shape, sharpen your silhouette and elevate your appearance. When a suit fits as it should, it brings confidence with it. You stand taller, move more comfortably, and feel assured in any setting, whether that's a formal event, a business meeting, or a special occasion. That's why tailoring shouldn't be an optional extra, rather the foundation of timeless style and the key to a suit that truly works. Paying attention to the following details and avoiding simple errors will ensure that your suit can become a powerful statement of professionalism, style, and self-assurance rather than a missed opportunity.

Focus on fit
Baggy trousers, tight jackets, or long sleeves look untidy. Prioritising fit over brand or price and investing in tailoring can transform a suit, ensuring it compliments your body shape.

Jacket length
Jacket length plays a key role in keeping your proportions balanced. A jacket that's too long can overwhelm your frame, while one that's too short looks awkward. The ideal length should cover your seat and sit naturally when your arms are relaxed.

Sleeves and trouser break
Show about half an inch of shirt cuff and keep trousers just long enough for a slight break over your shoes to maintain a sharp, modern silhouette.

Body shape
A suit should complement your natural shape, not fight it.

Choosing cuts that suit your frame
Structured jackets for broad shoulders or simple, unpadded styles for slimmer builds ensures a balanced, flattering outline.

Colour and fabric
From navy for the office to tweeds for cooler days, choosing the right fabric and colour for the occasion and season ensures you always look sharp and appropriately dressed.

Shirt and tie combination
Even the best suit can be spoiled by the wrong shirt and tie, so stick to complementary colours and subtle patterns like a crisp white or light-blue shirt with a classic tie for a polished look.

Accessories
Accessories can elevate a suit or ruin it, so keep belts and shoes matched, choose simple, elegant watches, and avoid over-accessorising.

Shoes and footwear
Shoes are the finishing touch on any suit, so stick to classic styles like Oxfords, Derbies, brogues, or loafers in black, brown, or burgundy to keep your look cohesive.
