Find out more about Scotland-based kilt company Eight Yards: Image 1

Eight Yards, formally known as The Kilt Hire Co, have been selling kilts since 1991, in the town of Musselburgh, on the East coast of Scotland. Eight Yards reputation for keen pricing and commitment to excellent customer service quickly grew, with regular customers coming back time and time again to both hire and buy. The team have expanded and moved premises three times in Musselburgh before finally settling on the very successful Bridge Street site.

We spoke to the team to find out more about the level of care and attention they put into every item of clothing.

Jacket & waistcoat: K2 jacket and waistcoat in a Graphite grey fabric with tartan detailing on the pockets and lapels of the waistcoat, a burgundy velvet collar on the jacket and burgundy buttonhole detailing to match. Paired with burgundy buttons.
The jacket is lined with a stunning red paisley and the waistcoat is also part lined with a red paisley and a silver paisley to create a nice contrast, finished with the tartan waistcoat adjuster.

Tie: Plain woollen burgundy tie with the tartan split, these ties are all made in-house. With a vast range of fabrics to choose from you can certainly make sure the details of your outfit continue into your tie.

Socks: Burgundy merino wool socks.

Garters: Graphite grey wool garter flashes, with the tartan split to match the tie. This continues a nice flow to the outfit with the tie matching.

Sgian Dubh & kilt pin: Handmade Netherwood Sgian dubh, made locally to Edinburgh these stunning pieces are unique from the blade to the handle. The blade is made with damascus steel and the handle is carved and cared for by Netherwood Designs themselves. The kilt pin is much the same apart from it does not contain any blade, instead of using the traditional pin and loop Netherwood have used a magnetic system, this allows us to sew the magnet into your front apron of the kilt (within the fringe) and attach the kilt pin without causing any damage to your new kilt.

Sporran: 3D stag sporran with an oxblood trim and white fox fur. The body of the sporran is made from oxblood red leather, this colour we found worked beautifully with the burgundy in the tartan. These sporrans can be laser engraved with a personal message or date.

Shoes: Grey hand painted valiant shoes by Barker, we love these shoes, again purely because each shoe has passed the loving hands of craftsmen and woman who care and love the product they produce. The grey shoe itself works beautifully with the jacket colour and the colours within in the tartan. We decided to pair this with a burgundy lace to give a nod to the tartan.

Kilt: Hebridean Cairn tartan with a triple tartan fringe. Antique buckles to match the finish to the sporran and the beautiful Celtic wave straps to finish it off. The kilt would of-course not be complete without putting our little 8 Yards touch on it, we have had our kilt maker use a burgundy thread for the bars and the same coloured thread on the edge of the fringe to really pronounce the tartan. Finished with a red paisley hanging straps to complement the jacket lining.
