Flawsome! reveals 81% of Brits say weddings don't need to be perfect to be memorable
Growing frustration with wedding perfection culture is...
New research from One4all Gift Cards reveals that, above all else, people from Wales believe wedding guests are expected to give what they can afford. Almost half (43%) say this is the most important expectation when attending a wedding.
Against a backdrop of continued pressure on household budgets, findings suggest people in Wales are taking a more realistic approach to wedding gifting, with affordability now sitting at the heart of what many believe is expected of guests. More than a third (36%) of Welsh respondents say they're unsure what the right amount to give is, highlighting how unclear modern gifting expectations have become. Guests want to mark the occasion and give something thoughtful, but many are weighing up what feels appropriate, useful and genuinely affordable.
New research from One4all Gift Cards reveals that, above all else, people from Wales believe wedding guests are expected to give what they can afford. Almost half (43%) say this is the most important expectation when attending a wedding. That does not mean tradition has disappeared, however. More than a quarter (28%) say guests should never turn up empty-handed, while a third (34%) believe sticking to the couple’s gift list is key.
This more realistic mindset is also reflected in attitudes towards flexible gifting. More than a quarter (26%) say cash or gift cards are appropriate, while 10% say group gifting is acceptable, suggesting many guests are looking for practical ways to give something useful without overextending themselves.
Thoughtfulness also remains part of the picture, with 19% saying 'it’s the thought that counts, while 22% believe how much you spend should reflect your relationship with the couple.
Overall, the findings point to a modern wedding gifting mindset shaped less by rigid rules and more by balance - between tradition, thoughtfulness and what guests can realistically afford.
Lou Hickey, EMEA marketing director at One4all Gift Cards, said: “Wedding gifting today is becoming a balance between generosity and realism. Guests in Wales still want to celebrate the couple and give something thoughtful, but the research shows they are also conscious of what feels affordable and manageable."
Lou adds, “That is why flexible gifting options are resonating, alongside more traditional expectations like not arriving empty-handed or following the couple’s lead. Guests still want to get it right, but what ‘right’ looks like is becoming more practical, personal and reflective of modern weddings.”
