Gustav Fouche on tackling delicate scalp woes

For those with sensitive skin, regularly colouring your hair, or adding lowlights or highlights, can lead to an itchy, delicate scalp. But fear not, you don't always need to suffer discomfort in aid of beauty. Celebrity hairdresser Gustav Fouche is here with the solution to sensitive scalp dramas.

“When we apply lowlights, they should always be placed in foils, which means the colour shouldn’t touch the scalp at all. In that case, the lowlights themselves aren’t usually the cause of sensitivity. Colour only tends to trigger irritation when it’s applied directly to the scalp.

"If someone does experience discomfort, there are a few options. You can switch to a demi-permanent colour that’s ammonia-free, which is much gentler. You can also look at changing the colour brand entirely, because different formulations can affect the scalp differently.

"Another important tip is not to shampoo your hair for at least two days before colouring. A freshly washed scalp can be more exposed and the follicles more open, which can make it more reactive. Leaving that natural protective layer in place can really help reduce any irritation.

"You can also prepare your scalp and colour with a deep conditioning treatment such as the Fabulosity Hair and Scalp Recovery Elixir, a lightweight prewash treatment oil designed to simulate microcirculation, strengthen follicles and promote healthy growth with rice water and Agran oil to soothe scalp and boost shine. Use it regularly once hair is coloured treated, too."

The Hair & Scalp Recovery Elixir is £53 and available at gffabulosity.com/products/hair-and-scalp-recovery-elixir?variant=44555334058268
