Can we choose the music you play? If you've been to a wedding where the music played was awful, this might be because the DJ was not reading the room or had a limited collection. Alternatively, it might mean they were tailoring the music to that specific couple, and they had different tastes to you. Most experienced DJs will be happy to take some requests before the wedding, it's your day after all. The age of Spotify playlists can mean that clients can have very set ideas of what they want to hear. Keep in mind that what sounds good in the car might not be a great hit on the dancefloor. Part of making a good party is ensuring that as many people as possible feel included.

Christmas weddings are magical, often with beautifully decorated venues that are in keeping with the festive season. I suppose the question on every bride's mind is, what is too much? As a DJ, I hardly play any seasonal music at the wedding, just a couple of songs to acknowledge the time of year. Any more than that, and it can start to feel a little cheesy. The important thing to remember is that the main focus of the day is your wedding and your Christmas theme should be a small bonus on the side.

Music is key to generating a great atmosphere for your party. Customising the songs to suit everyone's tastes is important, so look at the age range attending and consider what would please everyone. A band will usually play for one to three hours, so there will be time between sets when your friends and family may still want to be entertained. Therefore, having a DJ is a good idea, given most weddings last five or more hours.

Chat with the magician and ask about their experience and available options. A large percentage will perform close up magic, so you may need to shop around for different options. Ask if they have worked at your venue and, if so, what works well there. Price is often the biggest question. Some start as low as £100, and others range up to £1,000. It may be hard to understand why there is such a difference, but the answer is that a magician can do more than just tricks, with added value, experience and availability, the price is generally higher.

As an experienced DJ of 30 years, I recommend you look for a dedicated supplier who can cater for the whole family with a wide range of music that's suitable for all ages. When I look back, I realise how shockingly inexperienced I was at the beginning of my career and always thought music had to be blasting with all the latest club hits – how wrong was I? Now it's all about subtle tunes and lighting and creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that people will want to stay in and enjoy together.

The British Bird of Prey Centre in The National Botanic Garden of Wales, Carmarthenshire has continued to help couples celebrate their weddings during the pandemic, including one client who required evening entertainment. The director, Emma Hill, tells us more: "Last month we received an email from a young couple who, due to COVID-19, had to cancel all their wedding entertainment very last minute and were asking if we could help to treat their guests. It's unusual to have a request for evening entertainment, but we decided to do our good deed!
