5 Tips to planning a perfect hen weekend in the UK revealed

61% of pre-wedding parties now stay in the UK as safety, cost, and connection reshape how Brits celebrate. Rising airfares, safety worries and global tensions, including travel hesitancy linked to the ongoing conflict, have fuelled a dramatic turn in how Brits celebrate before tying the knot. According to new figures, 61% of hen parties now take place in the UK, marking a clear shift from pre-pandemic years when city breaks in Europe dominated.

“We tend to see interest in UK breaks increase whenever international travel feels uncertain,” said Laura Dubois, a UK-based retreat specialist at Together Travel. “In fact, over the past month we’ve seen around a 50% year-on-year increase in interest, with more travellers looking closer to home when planning their celebration staycations. Hens and stags still want a proper break, but many prefer the reassurance of staying within the UK where plans feel more predictable and easier to manage.”

Dubois added that the trend is not new. “We saw a similar pattern during the early stages of the pandemic, when international travel became complicated,” she said.

“A similar trend also emerged during the summer of 2022, when widespread staff shortages at European airports led to long queues, flight cancellations and delays across major destinations. Whenever international travel feels less certain, many begin to reconsider long-haul holidays and rediscover just how much the UK has to offer.”

Domestic tourism data echoes this sentiment. Almost one-third of UK adults (32%) say they are now more likely to choose UK trips over overseas travel, and around two-thirds (66%) have taken an overnight UK trip in the past year.

At the same time, rising restrictions and costs abroad are making foreign hen and stag weekends increasingly complicated. Destinations such as Prague, Spain, Krakow and Amsterdam are tightening rules on short-term rentals and nightlife operations, limiting large group accommodation and enforcing earlier closing times.

Increased deposits, stricter behaviour policies and noise restrictions have collectively made overseas party travel costlier and less predictable. By contrast, the typical UK hen do now cost around £187 per person, a fraction of the £200-£800 typically spent on flights and accommodation for foreign getaways.

Instead of nightlife-heavy weekends in Ibiza, groups are booking large homes in the Lake District, Cornwall, Cotswolds and North Wales, opting for restorative multi-day “hen-cations” focused on connection, comfort and experience.

“We’re seeing a clear evolution in how people celebrate,” said Dubois. “With group sizing and average costs, it often makes more financial sense to split a countryside property than book multiple hotel rooms. Today’s hens and stags, particularly older millennials and those planning their second chance at love, want connection, comfort and curated experiences.”

She continued: “The modern hen or stag weekend isn’t about surviving anymore, it’s about savouring it. The UK’s countryside and coastlines are becoming the new party capitals, just with better views and earlier bedtimes.”

Parties are now replacing bar crawls with private chefs, hot tubs, spa treatments, guided hikes, wild swimming and sunrise yoga sessions, all designed for shared memory rather than excess.

5 Expert-backed rules for planning a modern hen or stagcation

Laura Dubois shares the strategic considerations groups should make when planning a countryside or coastal pre-wedding escape:

1.Secure the property first, and early
“For groups of 10-15, the house is the venue,” Dubois explains. “Premium rural homes with hot tubs, large dining spaces and multiple bathrooms are often booked 6 to 9 months in advance, sometimes earlier for peak season. Lock in the property before planning activities, as availability dictates everything else.”

2.Prioritise accessibility over trendiness
“A beautiful location means little if half the group struggles to get there. Choose destinations within two to three hours of major cities or with strong rail links. Ease of travel reduces dropouts, keeps costs manageable and avoids the logistical stress that can derail group trips.”

3.Design one anchor moment per day
“Rather than overscheduling, structure the weekend around one standout experience daily, such as a spa session, guided hike, boat charter or whisky tasting, with unstructured time around it. Overloaded itineraries are one of the biggest mistakes we see. Balance creates better memories,” she added.

4.Invest in a shared ‘wow’ experience
“Instead of multiple small add-ons, allocate budget to one elevated, shared moment: a private chef dinner, tablescaped celebratory feast, cocktail masterclass or sunrise yoga session. One premium experience creates cohesion and makes the weekend feel curated rather than chaotic.”

5.Use shoulder season strategically
“Autumn and early spring often offer significantly lower nightly rates, greater property availability and quieter landscapes. A £450 peak-summer weekend can drop substantially outside high season, and you’ll get a more intimate, relaxed atmosphere,” Dubois shared.

Interest in stag and hen breaks typically peaks between January and March, the UK’s engagement season, with increasing demand for multi-day itineraries focused on experience, wellness and privacy. “As global uncertainty and cost-of-living pressures continue, Britain’s countryside may well become the new celebration capital of Europe,” Dubois added.
